G. Dalakouras: With Sofos we doubled our production in a difficult economic period

Mr. Giorgos Dalakouras is active in rural Alexandroupolis, who for the last two years has been in charge of the office maintained by Sofos Insurance Agency AE in the city.

Mr. Dalakouras, tell us a few words about your career. Why did you decide to enter the insurance brokerage industry?

G.D.: My career path in the insurance brokerage industry began in 2011, when I completed my studies in IT and more specifically my specialization in business IT and data analysis. Of course, 2011 was only the official beginning, because my father, Petros Dalakouras, was in the insurance market since the early 90s.

Tell us about the area you operate in, based in Alexandroupolis. How are economic and social conditions in general? Would you say professional insurers face any particular difficulties or challenges? Accordingly, are there individual insurance sectors that are experiencing greater growth and why?

G.D.: The economic crisis we experienced had the effect of negatively affecting the area of ​​Alexandroupolis and in general all of Northern Greece, primarily economically, with the reduction of purchasing power, which resulted in a social crisis.

The same of course applies to professional insurers in the area. The economic difficulties brought about the drop in insurance premiums, with a direct impact on the reduction of production and ultimately the income of the intermediaries.

However, in a crisis, private insurance has the ability to act as a stabilizer and we as professionals in the field must show our clients the opportunity to deal with the problems. This is the big challenge we have as professional insurance brokers.

Relying on this, in recent years, in addition to the mandatory civil liability insurance of vehicles, some of us have seized the opportunity and Alexandroupolis is registering signs of development in the health sector.

Also, my responsibility is to find new competent partners in the wider area of ​​Alexandroupolis, who will be able to respond to the challenges of the insurance market.

How do you see our insurance market? Do you see growth prospects in general or in individual sectors and what do you think this will depend on?

G.D.: The insurance market in recent years, following the upgrade of the supervision framework by the competent authority, in combination with Solvency II and the IDD directive, ensures the solvency that was so lacking in the previous decades and creates better conditions for its image.

We, insurance brokerage professionals, must highlight the utility of private insurance, advertise the new and safe image of the insurance market, and present quality and affordable solutions to our clients' needs.

Understandably, there is only upside, and to be more specific, in this time of uncertainty in pensions and health care, private insurance can act as a counterweight.

But it's not just the health and pension industry. there are also businesses that need support in their efforts to reorganize and private insurance can act as a basis, with the development of new products, depending on their field of activity, that will be their protection against risks, damages and losses.
